Love The Heterosexual, Hate The Sin My Thoughts On Prop 8 By no means am I or Jason, ready for marriage, however if we wanted, we can’t because people have voted and forced their personal and religious views into our lives. When a group of people are systematically discriminated, given limited civil rights and economic opportunities, then they become second-class citizens. Why is this still happening in America? Despite the growing presence of Gay Americans in mainstream society, I think the social attitudes toward the gay community are ones still rooted in ignorance, misunderstanding and fear. The opposing sides’ argument is that everyone already has the right to marriage, but a person just has to marry the opposite sex. That kind of statement is just a hidden confirmation that those people still believe being gay is a choice, and that one can change their sexual orientation through prayer, and therapy from ex-gay ministries. Why is the overwhelming scientific and psychological data supporting the fact that homosexuality is part of nature, therefore it’s natural being dismissed? Could all those scientists and doctors be wrong? Should there be a national re-call study on human sexuality? Since ex-gay ministries exist, and vary in their methods to “cure” homosexuality…where are those institutions and ministries to learn how to be homosexual? At no point in my life did anyone teach, pressure, or convert me to be gay. I’ve been pretty aware of that part of myself since I was six. I was raised by heterosexuals, and I was never molested. Why should I be forced to marry and be with a female if the union is going to be loveless, and lie not only to myself, but in God’s eyes? Why would anyone marry someone they didn’t love? Another argument against gays is the fact that two males and two females in loving relationships cannot reproduce therefore they are acting against God’s wishes. Have these people heard about the overpopulation in our World lately? Or even the fact that we are using up more resources than we can make? What about those people who are like my parents? They were unable to procreate (hence how my sister and I were adopted), should their marriage have been annulled? If had it been ancient times, my mother would’ve been killed for not bearing a child and my father would’ve taken on other wives. What about older couples who marry? Should they be forced to have children at their age? What about those people who are born both sexes. Studies show that 1 out of 100,000 people are born both male and female. God created those people…so what gender should they be allowed to marry and where do they fall under Gods plans? Another reason against gays is the whole theory of “Adam and Eve”. If God created “Adam and Eve”, what race/ethnicity were they? If they only had two sons, where did the sons get their wives? If they married their sisters, then we’re all products of incest. If a straight person doesn’t believe in the Bible, then why are they still allowed to get married? Every argument against gay rights, I have asked these questions and no one seems to want to address them. Marriage is not a religious word, nor is it something that has remained the same throughout the ages. “Marriage” has various meanings in different cultures, and as an American, marriage is part of the American Dream. A marriage helps define, creates families, and kinship. History has shown that a democratic society deteriorates when it denies certain types of people from their civil rights. |
It seems to me that people, who are against the civil right of me to marry a man, are those who have a strong religious understanding of “marriage” and want to save the “sanctity” of it all. They also say that we have “civil unions”. If ‘Civil Unions’ were just as good as “Marriage”, then heterosexuals should get them. You know why straight people don’t get civil unions? Because they know that they don’t carry all the legalities of a “marriage”. If Britney Spears can get married for 55-hours just for publicity kicks, then two consenting same sex adults who have been in a loving relationship for more than 55 hours should have the right to. There is no “sanctity” of marriage in our society anymore. Not when we have a high number of divorces in our country, not when most of our politicians are in their second or third marriages, and not when we commercialize marriage on “reality” type shows like the Bachelor and Bachelorette. When it comes down to it, it really is about love and our human understanding about the capabilities of love. And to me, love is from God, and to deny love is to deny his presence. I’m all for same-sex marriages but my solution to please everyone, would be to have “Marriage” and “Civil Unions”. Make them both identical and exactly the same in the eyes of federal, local and state laws and courts. However, I would propose that “Marriage” be for heterosexual couples who can procreate, and have never been divorced. And I propose for “Civil Unions” to be not only for same-sex couples, but for senior citizens, opposite-sex couples who cannot produce children, atheists and agnostics and for heterosexual people (regardless of religious faith) who have already been divorced, but wish to marry again (since as a society we’re trying to preserve the “sanctuary” of marriage). Since people want to hold “marriage” on such a high level of standard, then it’s only right that everyone in this society have to abide by those rules. Auburn U. Come Join Us In The 21st Century! While the world was patiently waiting for the swearing in of America’s first Mixed Race president something not so nice was taking place in college world of athletics. The Auburn Football Tigers hired Gene Chizik to coach their football team and replace the recently “kicked-out” Tommy Tuberville. College football honks know Tuberville’s reputation. His 85 wins in 10 seasons is rather impressive. Unimpressive is Chizik’s 10 game losing streak to end his season at Iowa State and his 5-19 record overall in two seasons. Chizik was the defensive coordinator for the Tigers back in 04. Of all the candidates that were interviewed only one Black coach was on the radar, Buffalo Bulls Turner Gill. |
